Thomas Chambers (1808-1866/69)
River Landscape
Oil on canvas18 x 24 inches

Description
Chambers was best known as a painter of landscapes and marine scenes, especially of the Hudson River between New York City and Albany. This painting, while the exact location is unknown, is reminiscent of his paintings of the Hudson River near West Point. A self-taught artist, his landscapes are identifiable by his use of brilliantly colored flowers in the foreground and bold brush strokes to give the illusion of movement in the water.
Thomas Chambers' visionary approach to landscape and marine painting places him among the most original and emotionally compelling American folk artists of the 19th century. With a palette and perspective all his own, Chambers invites viewers not merely to witness the natural world but to feel it—stormy, colorful, and alive.
