19th - 20th Century American Paintings
The start of the 19th century saw American painting dominated by portraiture. Traveling artists creating depictions of individuals, often focusing on wealthy and influential figures. Likenesses of America's merchant class, their families, children, homesteads and animals became the prevalent form of art. The Hudson River School of landscape painting, led by Thomas Cole, emerged as a prominent art form from the 1930's on. Throughout the 19th century into the 20th century Luminism, Tonalism, American Impressionism, Ashcan School, Synchromism, Harlem Renaissance, American Regionalism, Social Realism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism and Post Modernism were cohesive and significant art movements.
